How mass media influence the Tehran citizens’ political participation

Abstract

As societies become more complicated, the importance of communications in political dimension has significantly enhanced and mass media along with other social entities are playing more effective roles in political socialization and political participation. Present research investigated the relationship between using the national media political shows, Persian language speaking satellite channels and novel social networks with Tehran citizens’ political participation. The objective of this research is to identify level and type of using media by Tehran citizens which is conducted using survey methodology and questionnaire technique in which 600 Tehran citizens’ views were received and the data was extracted and analyzed in both descriptive and inferential statistics. The hypotheses tests indicated that there is a significant relationship between independent variables (using the national media. Persian speaking satellite channels and social networks) and (trust and satisfaction) and dependent variable (Tehran citizens’ political participation) and with 95% of reliability and based on indicators such as participating in election or demonstration and political gatherings, advertisement for political party, talking to others about political issues, interest in following the political events and news. In addition, the results indicated that effect of using the political shows in national media is directly effective on participation and the satellite shows have inverse effects. Moreover, the results obtained explained that effect of using the political contents in social networks is directly effective on citizens’ participation.
