Abstract

Knowing the thinking of influential thinkers and intellectuals is possible in different ways. One of the new approaches proposed in this field in recent decades is the approach of analyzing conceptual metaphors. In this regard, this research has devoted its main question to the metaphor of the West in Iranian intellectual discourse and has chosen a case study of the thoughts of Jalal Al Ahmad and Ali Shariati. The hypothesis of the article is that the thought of intellectuals such as Jalal and Shariati has metaphorical complexities that should be understood with the help of metaphor analysis approaches. The findings of the research have shown that although the metaphor of the West is used in the thinking of both Jalal and Shariati, but Jalal understood it in the sense of technicality and machine-likeness, and Shariati understood it in the sense of alienation and distance from oneself. The research approach was metaphorical analysis and the method of collecting library and documentary data.
