Technological advances in the extraction of unconventional hydrocarbons from shale formations, through hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling techniques, have made the United States a dominant player in the global energy market. Using comprehensive analyses from international statistical authorities such as the International Energy Agency (IEA), OPEC, and the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), as well as reputable American think tanks, this study examines the multifaceted impacts of this revolution on the United States’ ability to shape global energy supply, demand, and pricing structures. The findings show that the shale revolution has strengthened the United States’ energy self-sufficiency, industrial competitiveness, and geopolitical influence, and, especially after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has played a crucial role not only in ensuring Europe’s energy security but also in trying to dominate other major markets such as China and India through diplomatic pressure; an act that is referred to in this article as “political market-making.”
