This article’s central question is: What role does the epistemological system play in envisioning the future? In answering this, we first examine the terminology surrounding “the future,” followed by an exploration of diverse theoretical foundations that underpin differing ontological and epistemological approaches to reality and the future. The primary claim (hypothesis) of this paper is that the process of envisioning the future, and its characteristics, is contingent upon the chosen theoretical underpinnings. This article argues that a deeper understanding of the ontology and epistemology of the future is crucial for guiding this continuous process of co-creating the future. The primary objective of this article is to pave the way for a more critical and informed perspective on the forces shaping our world, the findings of which may be of interest to various disciplines, including political science and futures studies. The research method employed is qualitative comparative analysis.
